Toronto Zoo has officially revealed the names of its two newest and most adorable residents — Highland cows Blue and Jay! 🐮 These 9-month-old shaggy Scottish Highland cattle have already captured the hearts of visitors with their fluffy coats, playful personalities, and curious nature. Now, after weeks of excitement, the Toronto community can finally welcome Blue and Jay by name!
Highland cows, affectionately called “coos” in Scotland, are one of the oldest registered cattle breeds in the world. Known for their long horns, thick wavy coats, and friendly temperament, these hardy animals are perfectly adapted to survive in cold and rugged environments. Their charming look — especially their iconic “bangs” covering their eyes — has made them beloved worldwide, and now Blue and Jay bring that same magic to Toronto Zoo’s Eurasia Wilds.
The name reveal is extra special this year because it celebrates Toronto’s Blue Jays baseball team, currently thrilling fans with their exciting run in the American League East. Just like cheering for a home team, naming these Highland cows after the Blue Jays is a way to connect community, sports, and conservation in a fun and memorable way.
Visitors can already spot Blue and Jay enjoying their paddock near the Zoomobile station, grazing together, playfully chasing their care team’s wheelbarrow, and even practicing training sessions like target feeding. Jay, the smaller red-coated brother, is bold and adventurous, while Blue, the larger blonde, is more cautious but learning quickly. One thing’s certain — they stick together, and their bond is heartwarming to watch.
As members of the Toronto Zoo’s Outreach & Discovery team, Blue and Jay will eventually join ambassador programs that help teach visitors about domestic breeds, farming history, and conservation efforts. Their arrival also continues the Zoo’s partnership with the Jays Care Foundation, giving kids from across the community the chance to make lasting zoo memories.
📍 Come meet Blue and Jay at the Toronto Zoo and discover why Highland cows have become internet favorites, Instagram icons, and fan-favorite animals worldwide.
